I hope you have all had a wonderful and productive week. It is always a pleasure to see our students engaging so fully in the life of the school, whether in the classroom, on the court, or through our many clubs.
The Week That Was
It has been a busy and vibrant week here at Aldergrove Public School:
- Active Recesses: Our students have been staying active and engaged. We saw great participation in our Junior Volleyball Club and Junior Badminton Practice, keeping our gym full of energy.
- Musical Milestones: Our Intermediate Band has been hard at work rehearsing during lunch recess, fine-tuning their skills as we move further into the spring term.
- Creative Problem Solving: The Hackergals continue to meet, showing impressive dedication to their coding and technical projects.
- Space Exploration: We’ve been following the Artemis 2 mission on its journey around the moon through the live feed on our foyer screen.
Important Milestones
We are thrilled to see the ongoing commitment of our Eco Club, which meets every Tuesday to help keep our school green and environmentally conscious. Additionally, our Play Leaders have been doing an exceptional job fostering a positive and inclusive environment in the gym during morning recesses.
Looking Ahead
As we look toward the week of April 13 - April 17, please take note of these upcoming activities:
- Monday, April 13: Badminton (Before School) and Junior Girls Basketball Club (Morning Recess).
- Tuesday, April 14: Intermediate Volleyball Club (Before School) and Eco Club (Morning Recess).
- Thursday, April 16: Special Event! Students will gather in the Learning Commons to watch an exciting livestream featuring Dav Pilkey, the celebrated author of the Dog Man series.
- Friday, April 17: Junior Volleyball Club (Before School) and Intermediate Band (Lunch Recess).
Kindergarten Registration: We are currently accepting registrations for the upcoming school year. If you have friends or family who have recently moved into our community or have children ready to start their journey in Kindergarten, please encourage them to register at our school as soon as possible to help us plan for another fantastic year.
Theme of the Week: Curiosity
"The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence." — Albert Einstein
In a school environment, curiosity is the spark that turns a lesson into a discovery. Whether it is meeting a world-famous author virtually or exploring a new scientific concept in the Eco Club, we encourage our students to stay curious, ask "why," and never stop seeking new knowledge.
Thank you for your continued support of our school community. I wish you all a restful and happy weekend!
Warm regards,
Mr. Louca Mr. Pamayah

Literacy at Home
Helping your child with reading and writing doesn't have to feel like more schoolwork. It can happen during everyday routines and shared moments.
Interactive Read Aloud
The "Prediction" Think-Aloud
The Strategy: "The character is packing a bag and looking at a map. I think they might be going on a secret adventure! Where do you think they’re headed?"
Why it works: It builds anticipation and encourages your child to use clues from the pictures and text to guess the plot.
Other Quick "Think-Aloud" Examples:
The "Feelings" Check: "Oh, look at her face! She looks so proud that she finished that project. Remember how you felt when you learned to ride your bike?"
Family "Word of the Day"
Choose a "sophisticated" word each morning (e.g., resilient, cluttered, meticulous).
- The Challenge: Everyone in the family tries to use the word in a sentence during dinner or a car ride.
- Why it works: It builds "Tier 2" vocabulary—words that appear in complex texts but aren't always used in casual conversation.
Writing
Give writing a real-world purpose.
- Have them write the weekly grocery list or label objects around the house with sticky notes.
- Ask them to write a "persuasive" email or letter to you explaining why they deserve a later bedtime on the weekend or a specific outing.
- Why it works: It shows that writing is a tool for communication and getting things done.
Audiobooks & Podcasts
Listening is a critical part of literacy.
- The Activity: Listen to a story or a kid-friendly podcast during breakfast or commutes.
- Why it works: It helps children understand pacing, tone, and complex sentence structures.
