Dear Aldergrove Families,
It has been a wonderful week at Aldergrove, with signs that spring has truly arrived and many opportunities for students to shine both inside and outside the classroom. I’m pleased to share some highlights, along with a look ahead to next week.
This Week at Aldergrove
A Welcome Shift to Spring
The weather finally tipped in our favour this week, and it was fantastic to see students enjoying the outdoors in true spring conditions. With the field now fully dry, we were able to reopen and fully utilize this space, giving students more opportunities for play, physical activity, and outdoor learning. Our Eco team under Ms. Hopper’s guidance was hard at work in the school gardens making them beautiful and accessible for everyone to enjoy. We’re hopeful that the warmer weather is here to stay!
“Dreams” Performance
Our Junior and Intermediate students took to the stage for their Dreams performance, and what an incredible showcase it was.
- A special thank you to Ms. Gilbert for her outstanding work in producing and coordinating this event.
- Students demonstrated their learning in Dramatic Arts, bringing creativity, confidence, and expression to the stage.
- Our Tech Team (lights and sound) played a crucial role, executing their responsibilities with precision and professionalism.
This performance was more than just a show; it was a true celebration of learning, highlighting our scholars’ growth in literacy, oral communication, and visual expression. It was a pleasure to see so many of our scholars contribute to such a meaningful and memorable experience.
Looking Ahead to Next Week
Grade 7 Immunizations
- The Grade 7 Immunization Clinic will take place on Tuesday.
- Thank you to families for ensuring forms have been completed and submitted.
EQAO Assessments (Grade 6)
- EQAO begins for Grade 6 students on Wednesday and Thursday.
- We kindly ask families to prioritize attendance on these days, as consistency helps students feel confident and supported as does ensuring that students are on time for school each day.
Cricket Continues
- Our Cricket sessions will continue, and it has been great to see growing enthusiasm and skill development among participating students. These sessions continue to promote teamwork, coordination, and school spirit. Some of our Cricket athletes will have an opportunity to compete in a friendly tournament. More information on this to come.
GAUSS Math Contest
- Our Grade 7 students will participate in the University of Waterloo GAUSS Math Contest on Wednesday.
This is a wonderful opportunity for students to challenge themselves and engage in deeper mathematical thinking. We wish them all the best!

2026-2027 Kindergarten Registration
Bright Beginnings, Endless Possibilities
Kindergarten Registration is open.
Is your child turning 4 or 5 in 2026? Or do you know someone who is?
Mark your calendars and follow these simple steps.
1. Find your home school.
Use our school finder to find your home school - the school in your neighbourhood.
2 .Register for Kindergarten.
You can register online, in person, or by phone or email.
Visit www.yrdsb.ca/kindergarten to access the online registration portal or download the registration form. Once you have completed your application, the school will contact you to make an appointment to review and verify the required documents.
3. Register early for Before and After Care
All schools offer before and after-care programs. Check your school’s website or our before and after care directory for details. Contact providers early to secure your spot.
4. Explore and Prepare for Kindergarten
Kindergarten is where big dreams start small. Learn how Kindergarten helps children develop the academic and social skills they need to thrive in Grade 1 and beyond. Our skilled and caring teams of certified teachers and early childhood educators work together to support every child in a welcoming, inclusive environment.

Literacy at Home
We often think of reading as something we do with our eyes, but it actually starts with our ears and our voices. Oral Language is the foundation for everything else. If a child can say it and understand it in conversation, they are much more likely to understand it when they eventually read it in a book.
Here are some ways to grow your child’s expressive language this week.
Help your child move from simple thoughts to more detailed sentences.
How to do it: Start with a tiny sentence like "The car went." Ask questions to stretch it:
- "What color was the car?" (The red car...)
- "How was it moving?" (The red car zoomed...)
- "Where was it going?" (The red car zoomed down the bumpy hill.)
This is a favourite for building clear communication and listening skills.
- The Setup: Sit back-to-back with your child. Give you and your child the same items (like a few building blocks or a piece of paper and crayons).
- The Game: You build something simple and give only verbal directions to your child to try and match it. "Put the blue block on top of the red one."
- The Twist: Switch roles! It’s much harder (and funnier) than it sounds.
Next time you share a book together, try this "conversational loop" to boost their vocabulary:
- P – Prompt: Point to a picture. "What is this?"
- E – Evaluate: "That’s right, a dog!"
- E – Expand: Add a detail. "It’s a spotted dog running quickly."
- R – Repeat: Ask them to say the new, longer version back to you.
Instead of "How was school?" (which usually gets a one-word answer) try this instead:
- Rose: The best part of your day.
- Thorn: The hardest part of your day.
- Bud: Something interesting or funny that happened.
Word of the Week: ELABORATE
Definition: To add more detail or information.
Family Challenge: Whenever someone gives a short answer this week, playfully say, "Can you please elaborate on that?"
Mental Health At Aldergrove
May 11-15
Mental wellness is supported by physical wellness. With that being said, you may have received our e-mail about Jump Rope for Heart! Our donation page is open and accepting donations for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Students will be learning about healthy habits, such as sleep, food, and screen time to support wellness during the month of June.
As the long weekend is upon us, it looks like it is going to be a beautiful weekend. Try to make some time to get outside and connect with nature! Take a walk, have a picnic, play a game outside. Being outdoors is great for your well-being.
