Dear Aldergrove Families,

It has been another full and engaging week at Aldergrove, with many opportunities for our students to learn, compete, and grow. I’m pleased to share some highlights, along with a look ahead to the coming week.

This Week at Aldergrove

Badminton – A Historic Season

On Wednesday, our intermediate badminton pairs competed at the regional tournament at Richmond Hill High School, facing top teams from across York Region. Both teams started strong with opening match wins and competed with determination throughout the day.

While they did not advance to the final rounds, this marks one of the strongest seasons in Aldergrove history, culminating in three pennants. We are incredibly proud of the resilience, teamwork, and competitive spirit our athletes demonstrated.
 Go Aldergrove!

Cricket Continues

Some of our Junior division students continued building their skills through ongoing cricket sessions. It has been great to see their confidence, coordination, and teamwork continue to grow with each session.

EQAO – Grade 6 Completed

Our Grade 6 students successfully completed their EQAO assessments this week. We appreciate the focus and effort they put forward.

Looking ahead, our Grade 3 students will begin next week. We kindly ask families to:

  • Ensure students are well-rested
  • Arrive on time, ready to begin the day with confidence

GAUSS Math Contest

Our Grade 7 students participated in the University of Waterloo GAUSS Math Contest. This was an excellent opportunity for students to challenge their thinking and engage in rich mathematical problem-solving.

Literacy at Home

Whether your child is cozying up with a paperback or listening to an audiobook, sharing stories is one of the best ways to nurture a lifelong love of learning. Both reading with their eyes and listening with their ears are fantastic, complementary tools for building strong language skills.

Here is why both matter for your child’s development:

  • Audiobooks build vocabulary and comprehension: Listening allows children to enjoy stories, introducing them to rich language and complex plots.
  • Traditional reading builds decoding skills: Seeing words on a page helps children connect sounds to letters, matching spelling with pronunciation.
  • Both spark imagination: Whether heard or read, stories ignite creativity, improve focus, and foster a lifelong love for learning.

Try Out These Websites to Listen & Read!

Explore these wonderful, family-friendly digital libraries at home this week to find your child's next favorite story:

  • Storyline Online (storylineonline.net/library): Watch and listen as celebrated actors read beloved picture books aloud with beautiful, animated illustrations.
  • World Stories (worldstories.org.uk/library): A fantastic collection of traditional tales and stories from around the world, available to read and listen to in multiple languages.
  • Unite for Literacy (uniteforliteracy.com): A vibrant digital library of non-fiction and picture books that children can read, featuring audio narration options in dozens of different languages.
  • Starfall (starfall.com): This site offers interactive phonics stories, comics, and fairy tales that kids can read along with.
  • Flyleaf Publishing (flyleafpublishing.com): A wonderful emergent reader e-book library designed to help beginning readers practice and master foundational reading skills.
  • Sora (soraapp.com/welcome): Check your student’s login! Sora connects students to a massive digital library of e-books and audiobooks provided through school.
