Theme of the Week: Belonging in Our Diverse Community
Dear Families,
It is hard to believe that November has arrived! The leaves are falling, the days are becoming shorter, and temperatures are beginning to drop. As we transition into the colder months, we kindly ask families to ensure that students come to school dressed appropriately for the weather. Layers, jackets, and appropriate footwear help students stay comfortable during outdoor learning, recess, and physical activity.
As we enter November, we are also reminded of the many significant faith days and celebrations recognized by members of our diverse school community throughout the month. At Aldergrove, our guiding question continues to encourage us to think about how our actions contribute to a positive and inclusive environment for everyone. Taking time to learn about and appreciate the traditions, beliefs, and experiences of others helps strengthen our sense of belonging and reminds us that our diversity is one of our greatest strengths. By showing curiosity, respect, and kindness toward one another, we continue to build a community where everyone feels welcomed, valued, and included.
Today, students and staff enjoyed our Dress Like Fall Day, and it was wonderful to see so many members of our community embrace the spirit of the season. From cozy autumn colours and flannel shirts to the creative Halloween costumes some students chose to wear, the day was filled with fun, laughter, and school spirit. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make the day so enjoyable.
Our Grade 8 students continued their participation in the REALyouth program through the John Howard Society. Through engaging discussions and activities, students have been exploring leadership, healthy relationships, resilience, decision-making, and ways to make positive contributions to their communities. These learning opportunities align closely with our ongoing efforts to help students recognize the impact they can have through their choices and actions.
This week, our Grade 6 students visited the Holocaust Museum, where they engaged in an important learning experience focused on understanding the Holocaust and its impact on individuals, families, and communities. Visits such as these help students develop empathy, critical thinking skills, and a deeper understanding of the consequences of discrimination, hatred, and intolerance. Learning about historical events through authentic experiences encourages students to reflect on the importance of standing up for inclusion, human rights, and respect for all people. These lessons connect directly to our commitment to fostering a safe, caring, and equitable school environment.
Looking Ahead
Dairy Farmers Presentations
Next week, students in Kindergarten and Grade 6 will participate in presentations hosted by representatives from Ontario's dairy farming community. These sessions provide students with opportunities to learn about agriculture, food production, nutrition, animal care, and the important role that dairy farming plays in communities across Ontario. Hands-on learning experiences such as these help students make real-world connections to classroom learning.
Grade 8 Visit to Milliken Mills High School
Our Grade 8 students will also be visiting Milliken Mills High School next week. This visit will provide students with an opportunity to tour the school, learn about available programs, and begin thinking about the exciting transition to secondary school. Experiences like these help students feel informed, confident, and prepared for the next stage of their educational journey.
Save the Date: Gingerbread Night
Please mark your calendars for Gingerbread Night at Aldergrove on December 3rd!
This cherished community event is always a wonderful opportunity for families to come together, celebrate the season, and connect with one another. More information will be shared in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for additional details.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support as we work together to create an environment where every student feels a strong sense of belonging and has the opportunity to thrive.
Warm regards,
Mr. Louca Mrs. Bhatt
Principal Vice-Principal
Quote of the Week
"Our ability to reach unity in diversity will be the beauty and the test of our civilization."
– Mahatma Gandhi
This quote reminds us that strong communities are built when people from different backgrounds come together with respect, understanding, and a shared commitment to helping everyone belong.
Library Update
The Library has been a buzz this month with visits from the Ontario Science Center. The Grade 7 classes have had amazing opportunities to design, build and test different projects. We are very grateful for the many opportunities we had this month to welcome the Science Centre into various classes.
Ms. Nandakumar’s class had their makerspace this week! Our focus was Biodiversity. Students were assigned groups to do things like:
-build a bird nest from natural materials
-make a bird feeder from recycled materials
-water sample viewing under a microscope to look for microorganisms
-seed sorting and identification
-build a seed spreader
-build a winogradsky column to culture their own bacterial community
We engaged in discussions surrounding human impacts on the environment, pollution, urban sprawl, and the importance of maintaining biodiversity balance to maintain healthy ecosystems.
We are also starting to plan and look forward to our Bookfair coming up!! The Bookfair will be up and running on Monday November 16 through to the 20th. It will be open after school until 3:30pm daily and on Parent Teacher Interview night and the morning of interviews on Friday.
